About Western University (Ontario)

Founded on March 7, 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth (1817–1901) ‘The Western University of London Ontario’ opened its doors to students for the first time in 1881. Four faculties – Arts, Divinity, Law and Medicine were there at Western's inception. Combining more than 1,350 faculty members and more than 30,000 students, the university has established itself as a globally recognized destination for academic excellence and leadership development achieved through learning and research.

Touch tradition inside the historic University College or glimpse the future inside the LEED-certified Amit Chakma Engineering building. Western boasts more than 7 million square feet of space in 87 buildings that are joined together by 16 km of roadway and 15 km of sidewalks situated on more than 500 acres of land. There are more than 7,000 parking spaces available in 21 lots.

Approximately 200 clubs operate through the Students’ Council. There are more than 40 cultural clubs as well as academic, political, philanthropic or special interest. Western’s 46 varsity sports teams and clubs compete in national athletics each year. Additional intramural leagues, sports clubs and the best student recreation facility in the country offer a wide range of fitness options. Athletic financial awards of up to CAD 4,000 per year are available.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) supports Western University instructors in creating high quality student-centred learning experiences through orientation, training, mentorship, research, and innovation opportunities. 

 The Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the teaching hub of the university. We support the university’s teaching and learning mission by providing orientation, training, mentorship, research and innovation opportunities for instructors at Western so that, they, in turn can create high quality undergraduate and graduate learning experiences for students. We build bridges between disciplines and create scholarly communities of practice that allow instructors at Western to share innovative approaches to teaching with each other and inspire student engagement throughout our campus.

Western University (Ontario) Financial Aid & Scholarships

Financial support to the students is provided in the form of scholarships, bursaries, work opportunities, and emergency loans. Such assistance adds to the list of reasons for pursuing higher education in Canada.

International President’s Entrance Scholarship

Three scholarships worth 50,00 CAD each are offered to exceptional international students as a part of the National Scholarship Program. Students are required to complete a National Scholarship Application that includes an essay and a nomination from their school. The application deadline is February 14, 2020. Extracurricular performance and innovative thought are highly recommended along with outstanding academics.

Admissions Scholarship

A student must apply for admission directly from secondary school to Western's main campus for full-time first-year studies to be eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship is directly awarded upon admission to undergraduate programs in Western, no extra application is required. Below are the specifications-

Western University Famous Alumni’s

As of November 2007, the University of Western Ontario has over 220,000 alumni residing in over 100 countries.Throughout Western's history, faculty, alumni, and former students have played prominent roles in many different fields and have won the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize and other awards such as the Rhodes Scholarship.

[Former faculty member Frederick Banting received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of insulin.

 Alice Munro, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013, studied in the university's English department for two years under a scholarship and returned to Western in 1974–75, when she held the post of writer-in-residence. She was later awarded an honorary degree.

 Two graduates from Western have also travelled in space, namely Bjarni Tryggvason and Roberta Bondar.

Many former students have gained local and national prominence for serving in government, such as James Bartleman, who served as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 2002 to 2007, and Sheila Copps who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Western's alumni also include a number of provincial premiers, including former premiers of Ontario John Robarts and David Peterson, and the former premier of Alberta, Don Getty. A number of graduates have also served prominent positions on the international level. Examples include Glenn Stevens, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia and Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Western University English Language Requirments

• IELTS Academic is required with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0.
• The minimum score required on the internet-based TOEFL is 83 with no score below 20, and a 550 on the paperbased test with a 5 on the TWE.
• A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56.
