In addition, you will gain career ready business skills that are sought after by employers, including teamwork, communication, presentation and leadership skills.

Extended Professional Practice

This MSc course is now available with Extended Professional Practice. This 18-month option is aimed at students who are looking to develop a deeper understanding of business in a very practical way. You will undertake two Professional Practice modules which will take the form of either an internship with a host organisation, or a campus-based professional experience. Students are expected to spend twenty-two weeks at one (or more) work setting(s), and will have the opportunity to apply theory to practice. Course information

You’ll develop a thorough understanding of how the markets work, enabling you to make money, while understanding where the pitfalls lie and how best to avoid them.

‘Trading’ covers the selection, purchase and sale of financial securities, and is at the core of global financial markets. Its activities range from arbitrage and market-making by individual traders to proprietary trading by financial institutions. To be a successful trader, and to lead trading desks or departments, you need an understanding of trading economics, global economic fundamentals, market behaviour analysis, technical indicators and algorithmic trading.

Using our on-campus simulated trading floor, this course offers hands-on experience in the art of trading. This practical dimension is underpinned by a solid grounding in the behaviour of global financial markets, the principles of equity trading and evaluation, bond trading and financial derivatives, stock markets in emerging economies, and proprietary trading.

Career prospects

This course will help you to become a smart and agile trader, able to make fast decisions leading to well-informed and well-executed trades which adhere to the relevant ethical and regulatory frameworks.

You will graduate with a set of highly practical and well-applied skills which are in great demand within the global financial markets. You will demonstrate well-developed powers of analysis, clear perspectives on strategy and strategic thinking, and effective research and communication skills.

You’ll be well-versed in the principles of equity trading and evaluation, bond trading, and financial derivatives, with a good understanding of the economic, financial, social and technological contexts of trading. Successfully completing this course means you’ll have unrivalled competitive advantage in the global finance employment market.

Where our graduates work

When you graduate, you might go to work for a hedge fund, an investment bank, a brokerage or an insurer, working in trading, investments, passing to market, risk-consulting or data analytics.

If you work as a trader, you might specialise in a particular area – such as shares, fixed-interest bonds or forex markets. You could work as a flow trader, buying and selling securities, futures, options and commodities on behalf of clients. You might instead work in proprietary trading, on behalf of the organisation you work for (or yourself). Or you might be a sales trader, placing orders for clients.

Other options will also be open to you; you might be interested in working for a company which doesn’t trade but which supports, analyses or supplies those that do; for example, a technology company, a publisher, or a research, media or news outlet. Alternatively, you might want to start your own business.

A second class honours degree (2:2) or equivalent, in a relevant subject.
