This Foundation Degree offers a unique opportunity to plan, create and grow a business alongside academic study. Attention is focused on the dynamic and visionary approach to business created by entrepreneurs, and students are encouraged to explore for themselves their own entrepreneurial skills.
The programme is designed to support you in starting your own business, growing an existing business or perhaps developing a new business venture within your employer’s organisation.
You will be given the opportunity to start your own new business venture while studying, which will help to prepare you for employment after graduation.
New York Study Tour
You will have the opportunity to join the annual New York Study Tour, to network with a variety of businesses and large organisations, plus get a behind-the-scenes experience with business and marketing professionals. Previous visits have included CNN, a film production company, a branding company and a start-up food delivery company.
The cost for the 2016 trip will be £915 per student which includes flights, accommodation, breakfast, guided study tours, travel insurance and a trip hoody.
Assessment is varied across the range of modules you study. Your assessments in this course will be predominantly coursework-based which will include business reports, group projects, essays, consultancy projects and presentations.
At stage one the course focuses on the early stages of developing a business venture. You will spend at least eight hours per week learning about the practical application of business principles, such as marketing and funding the new business, together with studying entrepreneurship and key issues in small business management. You are also given guidance in developing as an entrepreneur, with opportunities to meet successful local entrepreneurs and interact with the regional business community. You will have the opportunity to start your own business (or develop an existing one), or work in an existing business to research potential business opportunities. In either case, the project work is customised and learning is supported by the Faculty of Business and Law’s Work Based Learning Team and Enterprise Club, who are deeply involved in advising and transforming new businesses throughout the region. You will have access to a wide range of support services throughout your course.
At stage two you will focus on managing a growing business. Elements include looking after customers, managing money, and small business growth strategies. You will be supported in your personal development, this time with a focus on management skills.
