You will apply for the specific Professional Doctorate award you are interested in, but you will be part of the overall community of Professional Doctorate students across the University, participating in shared modules together, whilst also benefiting from close associations with your 'home' school. You will be allocated supervisors who are experts in your chosen discipline area.

This programme has been designed to enhance your professional development and enable you to progress as a ‘researching professional’ within your own setting and beyond. To achieve this, principles of professional learning are integrated throughout the learning and teaching, including:

• A strong emphasis on reflective practice throughout the programme.
• Opportunities to situate learning within contexts that are familiar to you and actively facilitating you to explore interdisciplinary practice in a broader range of disciplines and contexts.
• An option for workplace ‘consultancy’ experience that combines research skills with practice-based interventions.
• Teaching and learning that actively includes working as a group to address issues and challenges in interdisciplinary ways, using this as a vehicle for deeper learning and understanding.

Whilst you will graduate with a unique range of attributes, fundamentally, this programme aims to create a community of scholars who display ‘doctoral characteristics’ – that is, the qualities and skills associated with doctoral graduates. It is also about preparing you for working in a post-digital world, where 21st century qualities, such as being value-based, reflective and transdisciplinary, are an expectation of professionals.

This part-time programme is designed to be completed in four years and will be delivered through flexible and blended learning. There will be two intensive 6-day residential periods each year, with interactive online learning activities and self-study occurring between times.

The first two years include core taught modules that all students undertaking the Professional Doctorate Programme will take together, along with transferable skills training conducted alongside other doctoral students. Years three and four include an option module (where you may elect to undertake a practice-based intervention module), one further core module and writing of the doctoral thesis.

You will be encouraged to:

• Demonstrate critical insight into personal and professional identities
• Engage critically with a range of research paradigms, theories and methodologies
• Evaluate in-depth theory relating to leadership and change, applying this to different professional and interdisciplinary contexts
• Utilise in-depth knowledge and skills in your discipline, to offer evidence-based solutions that are relevant and transferable across different contexts
• Deploy design-led approaches to develop innovative solutions to complex professional challenges
• Engage critically with a broad range of digital technologies, demonstrating knowledge and skills around access and utility
• Apply advanced research knowledge and skills to influence policy, strategy, and leadership
• Demonstrate confidence and expertise, in working with teams, to effectively evaluate and manage complex situations.

Academic qualification equivalents

• Applicants who hold a Masters degree from a central university or centre of advanced study or a MSc (Eng) in Engineering/Technology, may be considered for postgraduate research. You must submit your degree transcripts.

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS: The requirement for most undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is IELTS 6.5 overall with a 6.0 in writing and 6.0/5.5 minimum in the other three components.
• TOEFL (iBT): 88 overall, including at least 21 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
• PTE: 62 overall, including at least 56 in all four skills
