The name Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly Ryerson University, honours Egerton Ryerson, the first superintendent of education in Ontario and a strong proponent of public education. A public institution called Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) was founded in 1948 to meet the demand for skilled tradesmen created by the end of World War II. TMU is a postsecondary institution created to integrate academic theory and technical education. In late April 2022, Ryerson University changed its name to Toronto Metropolitan University. The name change is the first step toward moving past Egerton Ryerson's legacy and into a new era.
