About University of Sheffield

Sheffield University is a public research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. The University developed from Sheffield Medical School (founded in 1828), Firth College (1879) and Sheffield Technical School (1884). These three organisations teamed up in 1897 to form the University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield in 1905.

Over 100 years old, it is one of the six original and highly regarded 'redbrick' universities in the UK.

Its academic departments are divided into six faculties, educating 25,000 students, including some 3,900 foreign students from 120 countries, and employing approximately 6,000 employees.

The University of Sheffield offers 350 different courses in 75 different subject areas. The University also offers preparation programs for foreign students and a number of scholarships to assist high-quality international students.

It is one of the original red brick universities, a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. There are eight Nobel laureates affiliated with Sheffield and six of them are the alumni or former long-term staff of the university.

Rated by the QS World University Rankings among the top 100 universities in the world, the students of Sheffield voted University number one for their student experience in the Times survey.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the University of Sheffield ranked in the top 10% of all UK universities. 33% of the submitted research was ‘world leading’, while 52% was ‘internationally excellent’.

Sheffield is ranked 22nd out of 250 universities in Europe for teaching excellence (Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings 2019).

University of Sheffield Teaching Quality  

The University has been named the University of the Year for Quality Teaching by The Times and The Sunday Times University in 2020.
