The oldest university in Montreal is McGill University, which was founded in 1821. It is a public university that was given its name by Scottish businessman James McGill, who left a trust fund of £10,000 and his 46-acre estate at Burnside Place on Mount Royal for the establishment of a school bearing his name. Ernest Rutherford conducted his Nobel Prize-winning research on the nature of radioactivity at McGill University.
