About Simon Fraser University

Simon Fraser University (SFU), a public research university with campuses in Burnaby, Surrey, and Vancouver, was founded in 1965 and has grown to become one of the country's top comprehensive institutions. The university, which is situated in Canada on the west coast of British Columbia, bears the name of a pioneering explorer. On September 9, 1965, SFU opened for business with 2,500 employees. It is also the first recognised Canadian university in the United States.

SFU is a part of numerous illustrious organisations, including the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the International Association of Universities, and the Universities of Canada. The university, which is frequently referred to as Canada's most community-engaged research institution, currently has three campuses, 30,000 undergraduate students, 5,700 graduate and postdoctoral fellows, over 160,000 alumni, and about 1,000 faculty members on tenure-track. 32 percent of graduate students and 21 percent of undergraduate students respectively are international students.

One of the top teaching and research universities in the world, SFU has grown over time. The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking of 100 international institutions under 50 has consistently put it among Canada's best comprehensive universities, while Maclean's magazine has consistently recognised it as Canada's top university for five years in a row (2015–2019). SFU's standing in THE's global university rankings has also increased, moving from 251-300 in the previous four years to 201-250 for 2022. SFU was placed eighth in Canada by THE in 2023, compared to thirteenth place by QS.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, Beedie School of Business, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Environment, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Applied Sciences are all housed at Simon Fraser University, an open research university. Students can select from a wide range of courses offered under each faculty. More than 300 courses and 27 certificate and diploma programmes are available at SFU.

The Simon Fraser University's Burnaby Campus, which is also the main campus, is located atop Burnaby Mountain and was created by renowned Canadian architects Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey. The Burnaby Campus, which has over thirty academic buildings, is bordered by UniverCity, a thriving sustainable neighbourhood. By using the University's numerous sports and recreation facilities, students can improve their dorm experience.

The university has a distinguished alumni list. Tery Fox is the university's most well-liked alum. In an effort to raise cancer awareness, an 18-year-old teenager who was recently diagnosed with bone cancer completed a marathon across Canada. Other famous alumni include Ed Hill, a stand-up comedian, Carol Huynh, an Olympic gold medalist, and Ghana's vice president Mahamudu Bawumia.
