The University of the Fraser Valley is a government institution that was established in 1974 and provides degree programmes in a number of fields, including accounting, teaching, business technology, and aviation. The university provides approximately 110 online courses in addition to two master's and 19 undergraduate degree programmes. The university successfully attained formal university status on April 21, 2008. The university currently has five faculties, a graduate school, and an arts college. In 2009, when the university began to expand, it founded the Global Development Institute and the Centre for Social Research. Additionally, the university launched a number of new graduate certificate programmes in 2010.
In addition to having campuses across Canada, Chandigarh, India, is home to the University of the Fraser Valley's international campus. The Abbotsford campus, which houses the university's main buildings, has a number of amenities geared at students, including a library, office spaces, a cafeteria, a residential section, a bookshop, and sports and student centres. The Chilliwack campus, which is situated in Canada Education Park, is the second campus. The campus features a theatre, performance lab, nursing station, and dental facility. Graphic and digital design courses are also offered at the Heritage Park Centre's Mission Campus.
The institution also features additional major centres spread out over many locations, including the Trades and Technology Center, the Hope Center, the Agriculture Centre, and the Aerospace Centre. The international campus in Chandigarh, India, opened its doors in 2006. Students can begin their academic careers in India and complete their degree programmes on a Canadian campus. The institution conferred 2,604 certifications overall and 1,038 bachelor's degrees during the 2017–2018 academic year. 14,849 students were enrolled in school that year, with 57% of them being female. The University of the Fraser Valley has 25 students in each average class. Additionally, the university accepts a significant number of overseas students each year; in 2017, there were 1,708 international students enrolled. These demographics were representative of 64 distinct nations worldwide. The academic staff totaled 722, while the administrative staff totaled 699 in the same year.
