CLU is a selective, comprehensive institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in the liberal arts and sciences and professional fields. The university was founded in 1959 with the goal of assisting individuals in discovering their life's purpose. In September of 1961, 330 students enrolled at the college. Two of its schools are accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing and the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Theological Schools. The university is affiliated with the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities as well as a few other organisations.

The main campus of California Lutheran University is located in Thousand Oaks, California, between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. There are dormitories, academic buildings, dining halls, a fitness centre, and sports facilities on the 225-acre property. When not studying, students at Cal Lutheran have ample opportunities to relax. The Outdoor Recreation programme allows students to engage in activities such as hiking, snowboarding, and rock climbing. Additionally, the university operates four satellite campuses in Oxnard, Santa Maria, Westlake Village, and Woodland Hills. The city of Thousand Oaks is recognised as one of the most desirable places to live and work due to its tranquil and culturally diverse environment, which is approximately 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

There are 4,027 students enrolled at Cal Lutheran, with 2,804 enrolled in undergraduate programmes and 1,223 enrolled in graduate programmes. Additionally, it is home to students from 48 countries and 40 states. 15% of undergraduates live on campus, and the university is proud of its average class size of 15, which allows teachers to devote more time to each student. Cal Lutheran has 185 full-time and 286 part-time faculty members, 88% of whom hold doctorates or terminal degrees. The administrative staff consists of 384 full-time and 60 part-time employees. Traditional undergraduate programmes offer 44 minors and 40 majors, while Bachelor's Degree for Professionals offers nine majors.

Over the years, the university has produced many notable figures in politics, sports, the arts, and education. Catherine Byrne - a politician who serves as the Nevada State Controller; Ray Haynes - a former California State Senator and Assemblyman; and James Ware - a retired federal judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California are notable political figures. Mike Borzello, the Chicago Cubs' major league catching coach, Jason Hirsh, a major league baseball pitcher, Cortney Jordan, an Olympic swimmer, Freddy Keiaho, a Jacksonville Jaguars football player, and Patty Kempner, an Olympic gold medalist swimmer, stand out in their respective athletic fields.
