About DePaul University

On the request of Archbishop Feehan, DePaul University was founded on June 30, 1898, as St. Vincent's College by members of the Congregation of the Mission, also known as Vincentians. On the 5th of September of that year, courses began in the St. Vincent's Church building. The institution began with only seven faculty members, no president, and perhaps 70 students.

The first president, Rev. Peter V. Byrne, C.M., was appointed on January 2, 1899. On December 24, 1907, St. Vincent's College became DePaul University. St. Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Congregation of the Mission, inspired the name. The university is currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). It also has a number of programmes that have been accredited by a number of notable organisations.
