Johns Hopkins Institution, founded in 1876, is a prestigious private research university in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The institution has four campuses in Baltimore, Maryland, as well as a biotech cluster north of Washington, DC. The bulk of Johns Hopkins undergraduates attend classes at Homewood, a 140-acre North Baltimore campus that also houses the engineering and arts and sciences schools. During their first two years, almost all undergraduates live in residence halls on campus, where they have access to one of the greatest campus eating systems in the country. Students pursuing a bachelor's degree in general engineering are encouraged to spend at least one semester studying abroad. In addition, medical and nursing students in 19 nations are free to study medical electives.
