Southern Methodist University, which was founded in 1911, is a private research institution affiliated with the Universities Research Association, American Council on Education, International Association of Methodist-related Schools, and Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The University's first college to open was the Medical College. As the number of enrollments increased over the years, the university decided to expand its campus. At a meeting of the General Conference in 1914, the university was acknowledged as the connectional institution for all conferences.
The main university campus encompasses an area of 608 hectares. The campus was ranked as the cleanest campus in the United States in 2016. The university has two additional campuses, including the Taos campus and the Plano campus. The Taos campus covers an area of 423 acres. Classes are held on campus between semesters and during intersessions. Additionally, it offers wellness and fitness classes. The Plano campus is comparatively small, with a 16-acre footprint. It consists of four buildings, including a video game design school, guildhall, and graduate-level programme departments. All three campuses provide students with all necessary facilities. There are a number of restaurants and cafes located close to the university. Moreover, public transportation is accessible.
The school offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes. The institution has 11,824 students in total. There are approximately 6,710 students enrolled in undergraduate programmes and 5,114 students enrolled in graduate degree programmes. The university has seven schools: the School of Education & Human Development, the School of Theology, the School of Business, the School of Law, the College of Humanities & Sciences, the School of Arts, and the School of Engineering.
The curriculum of the university offers a variety of electives from which students may choose according to their individual interests. In addition, the university's campus is home to eleven libraries. Each library has an extensive collection of books, journals, and scholarly articles. Students also have access to the library's electronic resources. Additionally, one of the eleven libraries contains a screening room, multimedia centre, and digital collections.
