This university's bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees are approved by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. This institution houses six colleges. The Nelson Rusche College of Business includes a school of accountancy, business communication and legal studies, economics and finance, management and marketing, and a master's degree in business administration. The James I. Perkins College of Education is composed of departments and schools, including the Department of Elementary Education, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Secondary Education & Educational Leadership, and the School of Human Sciences.

The College of Fine Arts is comprised of the Schools of Art, Music, and Theatre. The College of Liberal and Applied Arts includes multidisciplinary programmes, history, languages, cultures, and communication, anthropology, geography, sociology, mass communication, military science, psychology, social work, and government, among others. Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, and Statistics are the primary study areas of the College of Science and Mathematics. This university's research facilities include the Waters of East Texas Centre, the Centre for Regional Heritage Research, the National Centre for Pharmaceutical Corps, the Cole STEM Building, the Centre for Community Research, and the Rural Social Work Research and Training Centre.
