Texas A&M University was founded in 1925. South Texas Normal School and Texas College of Arts and Industries were the previous names for Kingsville, which is currently an open research university. The institute is credited with creating the country's first PhD degree programme in bilingual education. It is South Texas's oldest higher education institution. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools is affiliated with the institute. The institute was renamed to its current name after becoming a part of the Texas A&M University system in 1989.

The institute's 250-acre campus is home to a variety of activities. Its goal is to give students with all of the necessary amenities. The campus' architecture is designed in a Spanish restoration style. The institution chose to expand the campus space in 2010 as the number of students rose over time.
