The University of Maryland is a well-known public research university that is situated in College Park, Maryland. It was established in 1856 and is the centrepiece of the University System of Maryland. The university is the largest in the greater Washington, D.C., area. The university uses semesters as the basis for its academic calendar. The admissions process became more difficult as College Park gained recognition and climbed to ninth place among the most elite public universities in the US.

The University of Maryland offers undergraduate, master's, doctoral, dual, and postgraduate certifications through its twelve colleges and schools of study. These academic institutions include the colleges of agriculture and natural resources, architecture, planning & preservation, arts & humanities, business, education, engineering, information studies, journalism, public health, and public policy.

It is a part of the Big Ten Conference, one of the oldest collegiate athletic conferences in the nation. From New Jersey to Nebraska, each of the 11 states has a major public university that belongs to the Big Ten Conference. The Committee of Institutional Cooperation, a group of academic institutions that includes the University of Chicago and the Big Ten colleges and whose members spent more than $10 billion on research in 2012, has accepted the University of Maryland as a member.
