The University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 as a for-profit institution of higher education. Additionally, John Sperling founded the university in response to the evolving needs of the workplace. Regionally, the university is officially accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The university, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, offers more than 100 bachelor's, certificate, associate, master's, and doctoral programmes. The university's enrollment policy is completely open. Students are required to submit a high school diploma, GED, or an equivalent for admission. In 2010, more than 600,000 students enrolled at the university, a significant increase from the previous year. The university's main campus is in Phoenix, but students participate primarily online.

At its height, the university managed over 500 campuses and learning sites. School of Advanced Studies, College of Health Professions, School of Business, College of Education, School of Health Services Administration, College of Information Systems and Technology, College of Humanities and Sciences, School of Nursing, College of Social Sciences, and College of Security and Criminal Justice are among its numerous schools and colleges.

Students are provided with innovative teaching aids and a conducive learning environment in the presence of qualified instructors. All academic staff members at the university possess advanced degrees in their respective fields of expertise. In addition to traditional education programmes, this institution provides continuing education courses for teachers and practitioners, professional development programmes for organisations, and specialised courses for military personnel. During each programme, students spend roughly 20 to 24 hours with an instructor. The University of Phoenix maintains online class-specific resources, such as an e-library and other study materials. In addition, the university maintains organisations and clubs to help students develop extracurricular interests.

The university has a vast alumni network that includes individuals employed by some of the world's most prestigious organisations. It has produced over 1 million graduates with pride. Howard Schmidt (ex-White House cyber-security coordinator), Mary Peters (ex-U.S. Transportation Secretary), and Brad Dee are among the prominent and successful alumni (Utah House of Representatives member).
