The University of South Alabama, also known as USA or South Alabama, was established in 1963 and began offering classes in a downtown building that was not even part of the University. 1964 marked the official start of classes at the University of South Alabama in its newest $1 million building in west Mobile, with an initial enrollment of 276 students. The University of South Alabama's campus expanded in tandem with the increase in enrollment. Currently, the University of South Alabama campus encompasses 1,200 acres of land and is home to two hospitals.
