About University of South Florida

The University of South Florida is located in Tampa, Florida. On the 18th of June 1955, Governor of Florida LeRoy Collins signed House Bill into law, establishing a new state university in Hillsborough County. The University of South Florida (USF) was founded in 1956 and became known by its current name on October 22, 1957, as the state's southernmost university at the time. John S. Allen was the institution's first president. The university was originally built on the Fowler Avenue land. The site was previously inhabited by a private commercial airstrip that operated as the Hillsborough Army Airfield during WWII. The university now contains 14 colleges dedicated to a wide range of educational subjects, and it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The University of South Florida has campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Sarasota-Manatee.
