In 1931, the University of Tampa began as Tampa Junior College. In 1933, it was officially designated as the University of Tampa. The university building was originally known as the five-story, 511-room Tampa Bay Hotel, which was constructed between 1888 and 1891.

Today, the campus consists of laboratories, administrative offices, and classrooms. It offers over 200 programmes, including 16 master's degrees, 1 doctorate, 2 certificates, 10 concentrations, and 3 4+1 programmes. College of Arts and Letters, Sykes College of Business, College of Natural and Health Sciences, and College of Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Education are the four colleges at the university.

The campus located on Kennedy Boulevard in Tampa, Florida, is the main campus of the university and fosters a dynamic learning environment. On campus, there are eleven modern residence halls, twenty-eight dining facilities, and nearly three hundred student organisations, clubs, and teams. In addition to off-campus activities, students can participate in sports such as softball, football, soccer, basketball, and ultimate Frisbee. There are numerous fraternities and sororities for students to join and find people with similar interests. Tampa is a family-friendly and culturally rich vacation destination with an abundance of fun and entertainment options. Additionally, there are numerous parks, museums, gardens, markets, and restaurants.

The University of Tampa has 9,600 students, of which 50 percent are from Florida. In addition, the university is home to 1,400 international students from 132 countries and 50 U.S. states. 92% of the students at the university receive financial support, totaling $72 million in institutional aid. As of September of the previous year, the university's assets are worth $736 million and its annual revenue is projected to be $330 million. It raised over $14 million in 2018-2019 and had an annual economic impact of $1.1 billion. Annually, the University of Tampa hosts more than 400 events, and the HIRE-UT page is updated with 5,000 internships and 25,000 job openings.

The University of Tampa has produced numerous notable figures who have excelled in fields such as the arts, politics, and sports. Rod Blagojevich was the former governor of Illinois, Dick Greco served as mayor of Tampa for four terms, Bob Martinez was the 40th governor of Florida and also served as mayor of Tampa, and Pete Peterson is a former U.S. ambassador to Vietnam and retired U.S. air force colonel. Connie May Fowler and Amy Hill Hearth are both authors, and Joan Marie Laurer was a professional wrestler and actor. Freddie Solomon and Tino Martinez, both former National Football League and Major League Baseball players, are among the athletic alumni of the University of Texas.
