The University of Texas at Dallas, founded in 1969, is an open research university affiliated with the Universities Research Association. The university established a Graduate Research Centre in 1961. This centre was renamed Southwest Centre for Advanced Studies in 1967. Enrollment increased by 61% to approximately 14,000 in 1994. Early on, the university only admitted students for undergraduate degree programmes, but as enrollment grew, it began to offer graduate degree programmes. The university is widely regarded as one of the top 50-year-old universities in Texas.

The campus encompasses a total area of 445 acres. It consists of visitor halls, a dormitory for students, and parking facilities. On campus, the students have access to all necessary facilities.

The university's eight academic schools offer more than 140 programmes at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. In 2019, the undergraduate course has approximately 21,215 students and the postgraduate course has approximately 7,454 students, including 5,200 international students.

The University provides students with opportunities to conduct research in the fields of cybersecurity, bioengineering, nanotechnology, space science, and brain sciences, among others. It consists of approximately fifty research centres and institutes. In 1975, the Callier Centre and the university merged to conduct research on the prevention, analysis, and treatment of communication disorders.

It has a faculty of 1,342 and a full-time staff of 1,339. Additionally, it invests $122 million in research. Additionally, it has more than 124,000 alumni worldwide. On campus, there are over 300 registered student organisations. Its library contains approximately three million physical and electronic collections.
