Course information

This master’s course provides an in-depth understanding of disease processes from the molecular to the body/systems level, alongside the practical applications of biomedical science and recent scientific developments in diagnostic laboratory pathology.

The programme is composed of a combination of modules which progressively build to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) or master’s. You can choose one of three specialist routes in biomedical science, all of which aim to advance your knowledge and link to the IBMS specialist training portfolio: Clinical Haematology and Blood Transfusion; Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology; and Infection Science.

Core modules will familiarise you with the theoretical and practical aspects of molecular medicine as it is used in research and hospital laboratories. You will learn about the principles and practice of laboratory management, acquiring the skills required for researching and communicating in biomedical science, while optional modules allow you to gain additional specialist knowledge in areas such as quality management or genetics.

Our extensive links with leading healthcare and research laboratories, such as NHS and private laboratories, enable us to ensure course content is kept up-to-date and relevant to employers. You will be introduced to some of the contemporary issues facing the industry, such as use of new technology and management of workload.

We provide hands-on practical experience of both laboratory and bioinformatics techniques. You will be trained in biotechnology research strategies and gain a sound understanding of the nature of business based on bioscience knowledge and research, their opportunities for innovation and regulatory requirement constraints, intellectual property and ethical issues.

To qualify at master’s level, you will undertake a research project/dissertation, which may be carried out in the University labs or in the workplace if you are currently employed. We offer a range of projects in biomedical science as well as more specialist research areas such as sickle cell and malarial parasites as we have staff and practitioners currently investigating topics in these expanding areas. Previous students have chosen topics such as investigation of natural products to improve antioxidant levels in sickle cells and the anticancer properties of natural products on a leukaemia cell line.

Career prospects

The course prepares you for a wide range of careers spanning government, academic, commercial, industrial and healthcare applications of biomedical sciences.

Examples of possible career routes include working in laboratory quality assurance and management or becoming a researcher or biomedical scientists for the NHS, public health laboratories, commercial diagnostic laboratories, the Blood Transfusion service, university research laboratories and bioscience/life sciences private companies. Within the NHS, a master’s qualification is required for further career progression to apply for Senior Biomedical Scientist positions at Band 7 and above.

The scientific knowledge and skills you acquire during the course can be a useful basis for a career in: teaching; technical and scientific writing (such as medical writing or writing for the media); clinical trials; drug registration, patenting or monitoring; medical publishing or other information services; regulatory affairs or sales and marketing. The course is also an excellent foundation for further studies leading to a PhD.

Coventry University is committed to preparing you for your future career and giving you a competitive edge in the graduate job market. The University’s Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career.
