The MSc in the Management of Information Technology aims to prepare you for engagement with the industry in a managerial role by equipping you with professional skills. The course focuses on bridging the gap in the fields of traditional, theoretical and topical skills in the field of Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS). A special feature of this Master's in Management of Information Technology is Projects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE2) which is the de-facto process-based method for effective management of projects across the world. Understanding available technologies has become commonplace; employers are looking for graduates with management capabilities in addition to IT skills. Students who successfully complete the Global Professional development module and meet the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) evidence requirements, will gain a L7 Certificate in Strategic Leadership and Management and a L7 Award in Professional Consulting.

Course information

In today’s modern world, businesses leverage on technology and IT strategies to stay sustainable in the global platforms where they exist. The Management of Information Technology (MIT) is a course which aims to instill invaluable Technology Management skills in the students. The course focuses on producing professionals who can ensure that technological systems run smoothly and stay competitive.

This course aims to combine traditional and contemporary theory with the practical skills needed for the management of information technology aspects of businesses, bridging the gap between technology and management. We will cover aspects such as; Ubiquitous Computing, Decision Support Systems, Humanitarian ICT, Network Security, Project Management, Project Management Methodologies (such as AGILE, SPRINT, SCRUM) with a focus on PRINCE2.

We will also examine some of the tools and techniques available for the effective management of projects including; Tailoring, Planning, Quality Review, Quality Assurance. We consistently achieve high levels of student satisfaction with students praising the interactive style of teaching and learning, as well as the quality of learning resources and the opportunity for work placement (as project support staff or shadow project managers). There are also opportunities for students to achieve their PRINCE2 Foundation and/or Practitioner certification.

Wherever possible, our teaching incorporates practitioner input, which has previously included real life case studies from the NHS which provides valuable practical experience. The teaching team also use several teaching approaches (Problem Based Learning, Flipped Learning, Traditional Learning) and various technological approaches (use of virtual interactive platforms such as TRELLO, SOCRATIVE, ASANA) etc. This prepares the students for Location-Independent-Working environments.

Members of our teaching staff have substantial academic and industrial experience. This includes; former heads of IT, former Project Managers, Managing Directors of software development houses and Database specialists. They have or continue to conduct research into project management, big data and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) adoption and assimilation in organisations and they continuously share this knowledge within their teaching.

Career prospects

The course is designed to prepare you for careers in the management of information systems within a business.

We have an outstanding record for graduate employability – 92% of our graduates were in work or further study after six months, 90% of those employed in professional-level jobs (DLHE 2014/15).

An applicant for all programmes will normally be expected to possess at least one of the following:

  • Minimum of a second class honours degree in relevant subjects
  • Relevant professional qualification of an equivalent level
  • Lower qualification plus appropriate and relevant experience at a professional level
  • Satisfactory independent evidence of working for several years in a position commensurate with that of an honours degree graduate in a relevant field.

English as a Foreign Language This course requires IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5. Pre-sessional English is available if required.
