If you dream of a career as a SongwriterRecording ArtistSession Musician, or if you want to work as a Music Director, ComposerMusic Teacher or Music Arranger, the Music Performance course is for you.

The Music Performance course balances creative, technical and industry-related skills, with a focus on contemporary music performance and songwriting. Working closely with our ARIA award-winning teaching staff and a wide range of industry professionals, you will extensively develop your ability in solo and collaborative music performance, music analysis, songwriting and technical musicianship.

Music Performance students choose one area of specialisation: vocal, instrumental or singer/songwriter. All students are mentored in this specialisation by industry experts and also receive a one-on-one weekly lesson in their main instrument. You will also work alongside students from other courses to gain a well-rounded understanding of processes involved in the music industry.

The Bachelor of Arts (Music) balances creative, technical and industry-related skills, with a focus on contemporary music performance and songwriting. The Degree can be completed in six trimesters (two years) of full-time study. Throughout the course, students will:

Throughout the Degree, you will:

  • Craft and produce original songs;
  • Understand and develop performance at a professional level;
  • Work on industry projects alongside other musicians, music producers, and entertainment managers;
  • Record your own music in our studio and produce music videos;
  • Gain exposure to the Australian and international music industries;
  • Develop analytical skills in relation to music, music performance, and critique;
  • Undertake a 60-hour work placement.

Academic qualification equivalents

  • High school transcripts that demonstrate successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent. These transcripts must be certified and translated (if originals are not in English).

 English language requirements (one of the below):

  • IELTS 6.0 (no band less than 6.0) or equivalent (TOEFL or PTE equivalent can also be accepted). Applicants for the Diploma of Entertainment Journalism will require an IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.5) or equivalent. Collarts can also recommend English language colleges with a direct pathway if you need to study English before you start.

As well as a successful interview and/or audition, and/or submission of personal statement, you must be able to submit the following documents:
