About Bachelor Of Commerce In Accountancy And Insurance in University of Malta

The Bachelor of Commerce is a full-time degree course. The first year is common to all students. During the second and third years, however, students major in two areas choosing from Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Economics, Insurance, Management, Marketing, and Public Policy. 

On completion of the third year, students can graduate with a Bachelor degree or proceed to the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) course by specialising in one of the following areas: Banking and Finance and Economics provided that they have attained the required pre-requisites in their chosen subject. 

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Commerce degree and who major in Accountancy as one of the main areas, may opt to read for a Master in Accountancy provided they obtain the required grades as specified in the Master course bye-laws. 

Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Commerce degree and who major in one of the following areas: Management, Marketing, or Public Policy, may opt to read for the Master of Science in Strategic Management and Marketing / Digital Marketing / Public Policy provided they obtain the required grades as specified in the Master course bye-laws. 

The overall objectives of the Bachelor of Commerce undergraduate degree programme is to provide the participants with a high-quality and a career-oriented education for a diverse student population. It is an inter-disciplinary programme covering a wide range of subjects and areas of study. The course provides the participants with a broad understanding of the complexity and dynamics present in contemporary business and public organizations. It trains the participants to gain the conceptual skills and an analytical approach necessary to tackle the problems facing organizations in today’s environment.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Commerce degree course, the participants will have gained a deep and broad understanding of the two areas of study which they would have followed. They will have acquired the conceptual skills and the analytical approach necessary to tackle problems in the areas of their specializations. They will be capable of developing effective strategies, managing risks and take effective decisions in their future careers.

Course intended for

The target audience is students who want to enter a career in an area of Commerce or of Public Administration.

Career opportunites and access to further studies

The Course equips graduates with the necessary skills for employment in an entrepreneurial/management environment, or else in the Banking and Finance, Economics, Insurance, Marketing or Public Policy sectors.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics. 

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements

An Advanced Level pass in Accounting and an Intermediate Level pass in Pure Mathematics. 

To progress to the second year of the Course with Accountancy as an area of specialization students must be in possession of a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Accounting prior to admission in the Course.
