Program details

The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations program will position graduates for a career in municipal and industrial water/wastewater systems. They will gain a working knowledge of and skills related to treatment technologies and water/wastewater systems operations including related laboratory analytics. Through in-class learning and recognized work experience they will be prepared to write industry required certifications exams including the 4th class power engineering and water/wastewater treatment.

Program description

This program gives graduates the opportunity for expanded growth through their career by combining both water and wastewater treatment operations with power engineering. The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations is a one-year certificate program.

Graduates will gain skills and knowledge related to treatment technologies, unit operations, process controls and laboratory analytics. Through in-class learning and lab experience, they will be able to write the 4th class power engineering certification exam through the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA). Upon graduation, they will have completed a four-month practicum that could count towards the one-year work experience requirement by the Province of Alberta to acquire a Water and Wastewater Operator Certification. The Water and Wastewater Treatment Operations program focus on:

  • industrial and municipal treatment plant operations-Collection and distribution systems operations
  • hands-on work experience through both classroom and virtual reality training
  • four-month practicum in an industrial or municipal facility
  • chemistry and corrosion
  • water quality monitoring and control throughout water and wastewater systems

Graduates of this program can work in a wide range of sectors including municipal, decentralized systems in rural areas, pulp and paper, petrochemical, oil production, beverage, breweries, and emerging industries. Graduates can find work as:

SAIT Admission requirements and process

Admission at SAIT Polytechnic requires additional documents from international applicants. Application requirements for various programs are given below.


Selection CriteriaSAIT Polytechnic opens the admissions in the Fall Start and continues until the Spring start. Different programs have different time periods for their admission process.

  • The application fee charged is 75.00 CAD once for each program enrolment.
  • Percentage required in schools and the other major requirements are different for all courses:
    • A 65% record or a cumulative GPA of minimum 2.3 is required for the Bachelor’s of business administration.
    • Other courses require a minimum of 50%.
    • A common requirement in all the courses is the English proficiency.
    • Admission into the Institute is determined on the academic records.
    • Graduate employment rate in the institute is 94%
