Our Engineering and Management MSc allows you to pick topics of study, with the aim of preparing you to manage an engineering company.
Through a blend of carefully selected management and technical learning opportunities, this master’s course in Engineering and Management is designed to help you prepare to begin or advance your career as a leader within an ever-changing, competitive international engineering environment.
Incorporating the critical perspectives of internationalisation, entrepreneurship and wealth generation, the curriculum addresses key areas of engineering and business management theory within an international context, grounding these in real-life practice through research, case studies and applied work.
If you are a part-time student already in employment, you can choose the optional modules that you require to match the skillsets necessary for more senior positions.
Why Coventry University?
An award-winning university, we are committed to providing our students with the best possible experience. We continue to invest in both our facilities and our innovative approach to education. Our students benefit from industry-relevant teaching, and resources and support designed to help them succeed. These range from our modern library and computing facilities to dedicated careers advice and our impressive Students’ Union activities.
Balancing academic theory with practical considerations, this course aims to help develop your knowledge and capabilities in the core key areas of entrepreneurship and innovation, finance, risk analysis, project management, leadership and consultancy.
We aim to introduce you to key aspects and challenges of managing a company across a wide range of sectors to enable you to develop an integrated understanding of strategic and operational management. For example, using strategic decision making, risk analysis and environmental impact tools, we will consider the importance of business decisions and the leadership skills that influence business success.
Additionally, you will choose four optional modules from a wide range of topics which range from strategy and quality to contracting or supply chain management, sustainability and the environment or processes and materials.
You should have the opportunity to gain a range of management, intellectual and personal skills – including communication, cultural awareness, team working, objective setting, leadership, consultancy, presentation skills and digital literacy – required for operational effectiveness and success. We will also introduce you to a range of analytical tools and techniques, such as data gathering and analysis, problem solving, critical evaluation and structured report writing, so that you will be well placed to research, analyse and solve complex problems.
Your degree culminates with a master’s dissertation supported by a research methods topic. For students of distinction standard, we do offer the option to undertake an industry based dissertation through a student internship, which is an excellent opportunity to gain work experience over the project period, though places are limited and not guaranteed. Past dissertation topic examples have included: product development introduction; repair and overhaul processes; and introduction of autonomous vehicles for material movement into a manufacturing company.
This master’s course can provide a route into senior management careers in a broad range of careers in the manufacturing, service and government sectors, as well as start-up companies within fields such as operations management, project management, logistics and supply chain management.
Job satisfaction and remuneration prospects are excellent with high employer demand in most parts of the world for graduates who are educated in both engineering and management.
As a postgraduate student, when you are ready to find employment you can receive support from our award-winning Faculty careers service, EEC Futures, which won the ‘Best Placement Service in the UK’ award at the National Undergraduate Employability Awards in 2015 and 2016.
