Oscars also go to Germany time and again - especially those for technical achievements and the best visual effects. Hollywood films and international co-productions are also being developed with increasing shares by German companies. This results in an increasing demand for highly qualified employees in Germany.

Contents, goals and course of study

And the Oscar goes to ...

The coveted Oscars have repeatedly been to Germany in recent years - especially those for technical achievements (1996, 2005, 2006, 2008) and best visual effects (1997, 2012). More and more Hollywood films are being developed to a considerable extent by companies in Germany. This results in an increasing need for highly qualified specialists in the film industry, particularly in the areas of computer science, software development and visual effects. The focus on film informatics aims to train computer scientists and software developers as well as future managers and technical directors. For this purpose, the university conveys up-to-date knowledge about digital production techniques. In addition to a well-founded degree in computer science, students acquire basic skills in all areas: from the first idea to the script development, the actual film production, the post-processing to the development of visual effects. A wide range of technical equipment is available to the students: state-of-the-art equipment from professional HD cameras to the first-class equipped film studio including a control room and post-production units.

Course content:

  • Basics of media, audio and video technology
  • Media analysis, storytelling, script development, film production

Career, prospects

Modern films are increasingly being created on the computer. Everyone knows films that were almost only shot in front of a green screen, while the scenes and sometimes even the characters were created on the computer. Most of the advertising and cartoons are also created on the computer. This is exactly where the main focus of the study starts: It focuses on the work that is done on the computer during film productions. For example, graduates can work as 3D modelers, animate 3D characters, post-process and cut recordings, create visual effects, program simulations and much more. They can therefore pursue careers in various companies, for example at visual effects studios, television stations and media and advertising agencies.
