About Game Development in SRH Hochschule Heidelberg

Game Development Virtual Realities

"The game shows the character," says an old saying. Computer and video games have long been a mass phenomenon between art and commerce: recognized as a cultural asset, video games now generate more sales than at the box office. And no matter how often clichés are used - Germans love games: every second German plays digitally, now even more adults than children and adolescents together, and almost as many women as men. If you belong to them, then turn your passion into a profession: become a game developer!

Contents, goals and course of study

In the "Game Development" focus, the students acquire all basic skills in the field of computer and video game development - from early game design to marketing. The focus of the course is on the IT-technical implementation of the games, ie on computer graphics, modeling, animation, software development and programming. While half of the course teaches the basics, each student can specialize individually in the other half. There are numerous electives to choose from.

The practical combination of technical, creative and scientific skills including numerous project work in the focus "Game Development" is unique in Germany. It is tailored precisely to the requirements of the games industry and includes both an internship in the 4th semester and a final project in the 6th semester.

The course is primarily aimed at prospective students who will later work in small or medium-sized studios, take on management functions after a few years, or would like to set up their own development studio. However, it is also possible to switch to other industries after the bachelor's degree, such as automotive engineering or advertising, which have adopted technologies and processes from the game area (e.g. graphic engines or gamification). And if you would like to continue studying, you can of course join your master's degree anywhere or simply take the "Multimedia Computing" focus of our master's degree in "Applied Computer Science" (M.Sc.).

Course content:

  • Game history, game design & prototyping
  • Basics of media, audio and video technology
  • Computer graphics, 3D modeling, animation
  • Software development, programming, game engines & scripting
  • Company foundation, project management, technical direction
  • scientific work
  • numerous elective courses, e.g. B. Sound & Music, Game Publishing, Psychology and many more

Career, prospects

Your way to the future!

Attractive fields of activity for game developers are the development of computer and video games as modelers, animators, programmers or even engine developers. However, because concepts and technologies from the gaming industry are increasingly finding their way into other industries, there are also career opportunities for game developers, for example in virtual prototype development, advertising, filming, the use of serious games for training purposes, in computer graphics and in Research.

The success of our “gamers” can also be seen in the numerous company foundations. Since they learn all aspects of game development during their studies and are constantly working on projects in a practice-oriented manner, teams are formed at an early stage that realize complete, demanding and marketable games in their self-founded developer studios. The SRH Heidelberg University supports student start-ups through its founder institute.
