Do you like music? Do you enjoy working with people? Would you like to expand your basic musical and / or psychosocial knowledge and make it therapeutically usable? As a music therapist, you combine artistic and therapeutic work on a scientific basis. The SRH Heidelberg University offers the only master's degree in music therapy with state recognition in Germany that can be studied full-time.

Contents, goals and course of study

Teaching, practice and research under one roof

The music therapy course comprises a total of two years, in which an intensive internship phase is integrated. Practical music lessons, therapeutic techniques and scientific content are part of the course offering. The course can be studied in German (German Track) and English (International Track).

Music therapy is the targeted use of music in the therapeutic treatment of people of all ages. As a scientifically based approach, music therapy in acute intervention, rehabilitation and prevention contributes to the activation, stabilization and recovery of various patient groups. In practice and research there is a growing interest in artistic-therapeutic approaches as an important supplement to standard treatment.

The master's program in music therapy at SRH Heidelberg University is the only one with state recognition in Germany that can be completed full-time. It ends with the academic degree “Master of Arts (Music Therapy)”.

This course is for you if you ...

  • … Want to deal with therapy and health.
  • … Strive for a social profession.
  • … Are interested in medical and psychological questions.
  • … Want to bring their passion for music to work.
  • ... are interested in therapy research.

Our philosophy is to combine teaching, practice and research under one roof. Music therapy, musical and psychological / medical course content is imparted in an application-oriented manner. In the music therapy campus outpatient clinic and internships, the knowledge and skills acquired are practiced and trained under the guidance of mentors. Students have the opportunity to actively participate in the faculty's ongoing research projects and to implement their own application-related research questions under supervision in the in-house psychophysiological laboratory, thereby testing their theoretically acquired skills in scientific work.

Medical-psychological course content
You will acquire a sound specialist knowledge in the fields of psychology, medicine, therapy and neurosciences. We offer you an overview of the most important psychotherapeutic approaches.

Therapeutic course content
Across schools, both specific music therapy and speech therapy techniques are taught for different target groups from the adult, youth and children's area. Students learn to plan, carry out and document a therapy process.

Scientific course contents
As master's students, you will be introduced theoretically to qualitative and quantitative research methods and will implement your own practical projects in the study group. In the master thesis, you combine your competencies in your own project.

Practical music content
All students of the course receive lessons in the mandatory instrument percussion and in the optional instruments piano and / or guitar. In addition, the students receive voice training and expand their skills in ensemble playing. Self-Experience / Supervision The master's program comprises approx. 110 hours of group self-experience and 40 hours of group supervision to support the development of the therapist's personality.

Project phase integrated into the course (internship)
The clinical internship (300 hours under supervision and supervision) provides students outside of our faculty with intensive and exclusively practical experience with direct support from external mentors. The mentors are academically trained music therapists at home and abroad.

Career, prospects

Musically active - therapeutically effective - scientifically sound

The scientific foundations, methodological skills and professional qualifications acquired in the Master of Music Therapy enable graduates to work in a clinical, curative or special education context. In addition to this multitude of practical activities, the master's program in music therapy enables you to pursue a career in research up to a doctorate.

The application-oriented master's degree qualifies for clinical work when working with children and adults in the following key areas:

  • psychiatry
  • Psychosomatics / Psychotherapy
  • Pediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy
  • Neurology (early rehabilitation, rehabilitation and psychosocial aftercare)
  • Pain, psycho-oncology, palliative care

The transfer to other clinical fields such as forensics, geriatrics or neonatology should be able to be carried out independently on this basis. A branch in your own practice is regulated by law through the alternative practitioner law and requires a separate state examination (alternative practitioner / psychotherapy).
