Course summary

Biomedical Engineering combines engineering with an appreciation of the functioning of the human body, whether healthy, injured or diseased. In the clinical context, biomedical engineers play a key role in designing, sourcing and maintaining equipment, facilities and services within hospitals. Products include prosthetic devices to provide the disabled with tools to improve their quality of life, disposable plastic and wound care products, and precision metal implants including pacemakers, microelectronic devices, orthopaedic implants, diagnostics, contact lenses and stents.

Career

Graduates will be qualified to work as biomedical engineering technologists within the healthcare, medical device industries, in research and development facilities, and also in clinical/hospital environments. The types of product include:

  • New prosthetic devices to provide the disabled with tools to improve their quality of life
  • Disposable medical devices such as needles, and implant drug delivery systems
  • Non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedures
  • Laser and micro-surgical techniques
  • Computer assisted surgery
  • Joint replacement
  • ‘Spare parts’ surgery to provide cardiac assist devices, such as artificial heart valves and blood vessels.

Academic qualification equivalents

  • Class 12 passed students from a recognized board including CBSE, CISCE or a state board
  • All India Senior School Certificate or Higher Secondary Certificate/Standard 12 or Indian School Certificate (Year 12) as recognized qualifications
