About Play Therapy (ma) in Cork Institute of Technology

This programme is a postgraduate clinical training in Play Therapy. It aims to equip practitioners with the advanced knowledge, skills, and competences to practice as Play Therapists. It aims to equip practitioners with the clinical capability that would match international standards of best practice within the Play Therapy profession. Ongoing Personal Therapy  is a key requirement in this training and is not included in the course fee.

On successful completion of the programme graduates may be eligible for membership of the Irish representative organisations for Play Therapists. Applicants are required to submit a personal statement detailing their suitability, with their application.

  • Private practice as a Clinical Play Therapist
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services within the HSE
  • Play Therapist within the school setting / early years setting
  • Play Therapist within the homeless services
  • Play Therapist in community projects and Family Resource Centres
  • Expert witness in court proceedings
  • Graduates who successfully complete the MA in Play Therapy will have the specialised expertise in an emerging field of research, which in turn, will allow for professional supervision in niche areas

Academic qualification equivalents

  • Bachelor's degree (Honours) holders with a minimal overall first division result
  • First Class BSc Science/Arts/Commerce three year degree (for MA Global Business Practice/MSc International Business course)

English language requirements (one of the below):

  • IELTS 6.5 overall (6.0 for Business programmes)
  • IELTS 5.5 in all four components (listening, reading, speaking and writing)
  • PTE 60 (63 for integrated programmes)
  • PTE 55 in all four components (listening, reading, speaking and writing)
