About Bachelor Of Arts (honours) In Film And Documentary in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology

This programme is designed to provide a specialised knowledge of the history, theory and practical working of documentary and filmmaking.  Embedded in the programme is the opportunity for ethical and philosophical discourse with regard to representation, media and new technologies.

The student will be required to complete a dissertation in the final year. This crucial component of the programme will involve a significant piece of theoretical work. The practical components include such specialist areas as screenwriting, editing, sound, production design, cinematography, 4D Design and knowledge of the planning, budgeting, and management requirements involved in shooting and delivering film and documentary projects.

The programme is run in partnership with Galway Film Centre and has strong links with the audiovisual industry.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be equipped with a more considered set of specialist skill which will strongly position them to enter the competitive world of film and documentary both nationally and internationally.

Follow-on Studies: 

Graduates will be eligible to apply for a range of cognate postgraduate courses (at level 9) in other Irish and overseas institutions.

Mature Applicants
A number of places are reserved for mature applicants. Mature applicants will be exempt from the Leaving Certificate requirement, but will, however, be required to present for an interview to assess their suitability for the programme.

FEAC
A minimum of 5% of places will be reserved for those with a full FETAC award.

Materials Fee
Students will be liable for an additional materials fee of €100 per year for certain full time programmes. This fee is not covered by Granting Authorities. Material Fees are not applicable to either Erasmus, Part-Time or Full time Non-EU students.
