The agri-food sector is one of Ireland's most important indigenous manufacturing sectors, accounting for the employment of around 150,000 people.

Enterprise Ireland (EI) has identified Agricultural Machinery as one of the dominant engineering sub sectors within Irish Engineering. Furthermore, EI have identified this area as having significant growth potential in the coming years.

This degree has been designed to deliver high quality agricultural engineering graduates to local and national agricultural and agri-food industries, in order to meet this demand.

Students will gain transferable knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Manufacturing
  • Agricultural sciences

Career Opportunities

It is envisaged that graduates from the programme will be employed in a wide diversity of agricultural engineering related disciplines both nationally and internationally, namely;

  • Technical/engineering drafting, field technicians
  • Agricultural engineering design/systems design
  • Agricultural systems (destructive and non-destructive testing)
  • Agricultural processing, engineering sales, service etc. 
  • Cognate disciplines which involving heavy machinery design – (i.e. Forestry, Peat &  Mining)
  • Bioenergy/biomass sector

Some graduates may also become self-employed.

Follow-on Studies: 

Graduates may progress to a one-year add-on Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Agricultural Engineering.

Essential Information: 

Students may opt to graduate with a Higher Certificate in Agricultural Engineering after completing second year.

Location

In Year One, students will be based in GMIT Mountbellew, with some lectures in GMIT Galway (free bus provided).

In Years Two and Three, they will be based in GMIT Galway with one day per week in Mountbellew. 

 

Recognition by Professional Bodies

It is envisaged that that the programme itself will be professionally accredited by Engineers Ireland and the Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE) in the UK.

Materials Fee

Students will be liable for an additional materials fee of €100 per year for certain full time programmes.

This fee is not covered by Granting Authorities.

Material Fees are not applicable to either Erasmus, Part-Time or Full time Non-EU students.
