About Applied Physics Msc in University of Limerick

The MSc Applied Physics is a calendar year programme intended for graduates of physical science and engineering. UL Physics works with companies such as Analog Devices, COOK Medical, Intel, Seagate and BorgWarner. This engagement advances science, develops new products and processes, and creates employment opportunities for our graduates.

The course is delivered by researchers at the cutting edge of next generation technologies. They have an outstanding track-record in producing scientific publications, and intellectual property e.g. patents. Our researchers are members of the Bernal Institute at UL which is one of the leading research institutes in Ireland.

The Bernal Institute houses nationally unique scientific infrastructure for the preparation and characterisation of novel materials and components. The Bernal laboratory of advanced microscopy houses the FEI Titan Transmission Electron Microscope, which is run by one of the MSc programme lecturers, Professor Ursel Bangert, a world leading microscopy researcher.

The objective of the MSc Applied Physics programme is to meet the needs of graduates who wish to increase their skills with an understanding of applied physics and knowledge of the physical principles underlying material properties, and the operation of processes and equipment, for the research and high technology sectors.

Career opportunities exist throughout the high technology sector of industry, including microelectronics, instrumentation, medical technology, and information technology, employers include Analog Devices, Intel Corporation, Harris, IBM, Nortel and Boston Scientific.

Academic qualification equivalents

  • A four-year or three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university. First-division results are required with a minimum overall grade of 60%*.
  • Particular programmes may require an interview and/or work experience.  

         *The programmes listed below have specific entry requirements. Please read carefully if you are interested in applying to one of these       programmes.

Masters of Mechanical Engineering/Aeronautical Engineering

  • Students are required to hold a four-year or a three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university with a minimum average score of 70% or above and no backlogs.
  • Students for both courses must also submit a written paper outlining the details of their Final Year Project as part of the application. 

MSc. Nursing

  • A four-year or three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a first-level university. First-division results are required with a minimum overall grade of 65%.

English language requirements (one of the below):

  • IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5* with no less than 6.0 in any component.

    *Please note some programmes have a higher IELTS requirement.

    **Please note, we can only accept Academic IELTS. General IELTS will not be accepted. 

  • TOEFL : 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
  • PTE: a minimum score of 61 (with no section score below 59)
