About Sociology (applied Social Research) MA in University of Limerick

The course focus is on sociological research methods, and the intention is to produce graduates ready to embark on research careers in the private, public, voluntary or academic spheres. Modules on qualitative and quantitative methods form the core of the course, along with modules on substantive issues of contemporary relevance.  Theoretical framing and analysis of qualitative data, and statistical analysis of large-scale survey data sets is central to the course. Faculty have extensive research experience in a variety of areas, including the media, social exclusion, stratification and inequality, the restructuring of work, feminist methodologies, community development, education, marriage and divorce. A research dissertation is a key element of the course.

The aim of the programme is

• To provide students with state-of-the art methodological skills
• To provide students with an advanced level of knowledge and expertise in all stages of research design, implementation and analysis
• To provide students with an advanced level of knowledge in a number of substantive areas of sociology including social exclusion and social change
• To enable students to carry out high-quality social research, in work or in PhD programmes

Academic qualification equivalents

• A four-year or three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university. First-division results are required with a minimum overall grade of 60%*.
• Particular programmes may require an interview and/or work experience.

Masters of Mechanical Engineering/Aeronautical Engineering

• Students are required to hold a four-year or a three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university with a minimum average score of 70% or above and no backlogs.
• Students for both courses must also submit a written paper outlining the details of their Final Year Project as part of the application. 

MSc. Nursing

• A four-year or three-year honours degree in a relevant discipline from a first-level university. First-division results are required with a minimum overall grade of 65%.

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS: Minimum score of 6.5* with no less than 6.0 in any component.

  *Please note some programmes have a higher IELTS requirement.

  **Please note, we can only accept Academic IELTS. General IELTS will not be accepted. 

• TOEFL : 580 (paper based) or 90 (internet based)
• PTE: a minimum score of 61 (with no section score below 59)
