About Nursing: Adult Or Mental Health in Canterbury Christ Church University

We are excited that you are considering studying with us and look forward to welcoming you. Our programme has two pathways; adult nursing and mental health nursing, and you will choose your preferred pathway.

Our programme is equally divided between practice and theoretical learning. You will spend two years studying full time which will include undertaking seven modules and 1600 hours of practice learning. By successfully completing the programme you will have gained 180 level seven credits and will be awarded a Master of Science in Nursing (Adult or Mental Health).

On successful completion of the programme, you will be eligible to register your qualification with the NMC and practise as a registered nurse within your chosen field.

Why Msc Nursing?

The MSc in Nursing is an accelerated nursing programme taking two years to complete (BSc (Hons) Nursing is three years) and is open to applicants who have a Bachelor’s degree with Honours from any field of academic study (for example: English Literature, Sports Science, Biochemistry, or Psychology). Nursing is a rewarding and challenging career that can offer you a wealth of opportunities once you have qualified. As an autonomous registered nurse, in either the Adult or Mental Health field of practise, you will have the opportunity to work alongside people experiencing changes to their health and wellbeing, for example an acute episode of illness or managing an enduring health condition.

If you are unsure which field of nursing practice (Adult or Mental Health) is right for you our programme offers you the opportunity to change your chosen field at the end of the first semester. During the first semester, each student will undertake a four-week practice experience in both a mental health care setting and an adult physical health care setting. Following these two experiences you will be offered the opportunity change or confirm the field of nursing practice you would like to complete (subject to practice learning capacity). You will then continue with your studies and undertake your field specific modules. 

What will i study?

We have a clear vision of the nurse we want you to become. We want to help you become a critically aware, creative, competent practitioner of nursing who gives primacy to the delivery of person-centred care within our local and global community. Our vision, for you as our future nurse is of a creative, innovative, competent, visionary practitioner who places people at the centre of all you do. You will become a politically aware advocate and health activist. You will work autonomously and be a joint decision maker with service users, their families, and other health care providers. You will have a strongly held belief in equality. You will be a leader and inspiration to others, using expert communication skills, problem solving, and personal resilience to improve the health and wellbeing of people and the community.

Over the course of the programme you will have the opportunity to study nursing theory and practice and work directly with people experiencing changes to their physical and mental health and wellbeing in a variety of settings, including their homes and the wider community (including primary, secondary and tertiary care settings). Through these experiences, you will have gained the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to prepare you to be a practitioner of, and a leader in, nursing care. You will be part of a clinical supervision group throughout the programme where you will reflect on and develop your practice. Simulated practice learning will be incorporated into your programme and will focus on the development of clinical and communication skills.     

What can i do next?

Successful completion of the MSc Nursing will make you eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered adult or mental health nurse. This will open up a wide range of exciting career opportunities for you including working in specialist clinical practice, management, education, research or the armed forces. You could also choose to travel and explore the possibility of practising overseas.

Additionally, on successful completion of the course there are opportunities within the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing to progress onto further postgraduate continuing professional development, including specialist education and PhD studies.

Academic qualification equivalents:

• Bachelor of Arts/Science/Commerce degree of at least 3 years duration or Professional Degree (4 years+)

English language requirements (one of the below):

• IELTS       :         6.5 or equivalent, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Speaking and Listening.
• TOEFL     :         minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening.
• PTE          :         overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
