Course Overview

The community theatre practitioner works collaboratively with particular groups and creates participatory work that responds to their circumstances and environment. ​

On the BA (Hons) Community Theatre degree you will become familiar with the application of theatre in a range of social settings. You will work with theatre companies and practitioners who are active in the sector and have the opportunity to apply the skills you develop with a range of groups. You will learn the theories underpinning applied theatre and explore, through practice, the nature of performance and participation in specific communities.

Course Content

This degree provides the opportunity for sharing modules with Media, Creative Writing and English Literature. At each level, there will be a subject specific strand, a field strand (this will include employability focused opportunities via collaborative projects, certification, and work related placements) and a theory strand which will bring expertise from across the wider teaching team.

The first year of your degree introduces you to concepts of community and identity which will inform your approach to devised performance aimed at specific communities. Alongside this you will study Theatre Practice and Theatre Practitioners exploring theatrical genre, conventions and innovative approaches through theoretical and practical approaches. The position and significance of theatre as a mirror to society will be explored through the study of plays and performance from Ancient Greece through to 21st century practice. You will consider the study of drama through a range of critical perspectives and consider the religious, social and cultural influences on plays and performance approaches.

In your second year you will explore theatre for and with communities through applied theatre workshops and projects. You will be able to work in a small ensemble developing directing and performance techniques and consider the application of these techniques through an entrepreneurship or placement module.

Employability & Careers

On completion of the course there are various options available to you. You may wish to continue your academic study or pursue a career.
Academic routes include:
• Apply for post-graduate study in acting, directing and community theatre
• Secondary PGCE Drama Course
• Primary PGCE Course 

Career options include:
• Associate posts with established theatre/arts companies (e.g. Education officer, marketing and administration)
• Setting up of own community arts projects
• Graduate entry positions in a range of industries

  • Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, include one English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U), minimum 60%
