Course information

Responding to the pressure on central and local government to increase levels of preparedness and develop more effective responses to realised risks and threats, we aim to support the development of your appreciation of community-based approaches to emergency planning and planning, as well as the concept of risk and its importance for organisational crisis and business continuity management.

You will have the chance to analyse and evaluate emergency plans and emergency planning processes, so that you can go on to devise emergency plans and emergency plan testing programmes of your own. We cover important legal and political frameworks of the UK, European and international emergency and disaster management sector, giving special attention to the 2004 Civil Contingencies Act, which established a new legislative framework for civil protection in the United Kingdom and has significantly increased the demand for professionals in this area. 

This legislation imposed a clear set of roles and responsibilities on those organisations with a role to play in preparing for and responding to emergencies, such as the emergency services, local authorities and NHS bodies. These include: assessing the risk of emergencies occurring and using this to inform contingency planning with production of a Community Risk Register; putting in place emergency plans; creating business continuity plans to ensure critical functions continue in the event of an emergency; developing communications plans to warn, inform and advise the public in the event of an emergency; sharing information and co-operating with other local responders to enhance coordination and efficiency;

The course also aims to provide you with an understanding of the issues that underlie many problems faced by emergency planning and management practitioners, such as multi-agency cooperation and coordination. We will look at how these issues may be addressed, in practice with a view to enhancing the effectiveness of Integrated Emergency Management.

You will also be required to carry out an independent piece of research of your choosing, which seeks to develop skills in personal organisation, research and critical thinking, as well as advancing your knowledge in the subject area.

The need to enhance resilience to emergencies, together with organisational duties arising from the Civil Contingencies Act continues to create a demand for qualified emergency planning and management professionals.

Our graduates have gone on to work in a range of organisations with emergency response duties, including local government, the uniformed services, health and other public sector agencies, as well as private sector companies.

Where our graduates work

Graduates from associated disaster and emergency planning and management courses have gone on to secure employment within the public, uniformed and armed services, private sector and charitable organisations. For example, as a civil contingencies officer, as a consultant risk analyst, insurance specialist, business continuity specialist or as an emergency planning officer with Fire and Rescue Service or Police. They work for local government, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Red Cross UK and the Environment Agency.

Successful applicants must normally hold at least a second class honours degree from a discipline relevant to the programme. Applicants with a lower class of degree and/or with a qualification in other subject areas will be individually considered and will usually be interviewed prior to being offered a place on the course.

Applicants without a degree, but who have considerable relevant work experience and/or a professional development qualification, such as a Diploma in Emergency Planning, will also be considered for admission on merit. Such applicants will be interviewed and may be required to provide supportive evidence of their career to date.

English as a Foreign Language: This course requires IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5. Pre-sessional English is available if required.
