About International Law LLM in Coventry University

Ideally suited for those who are interested in specific international law issues or want to work for international organisations, NGOs and governments, this course is designed to develop specialist knowledge of this important, ever expanding, area of legal knowledge.

International law regulates almost every aspect of state law, practice and relations – from human rights, peacekeeping and anti-terrorism to world trade deals, foreign investment arbitration and territorial disputes – with the aim of creating legal norms and strategies to address global societal, political, environmental and economic problems.

Law has been taught at Coventry University for nearly 50 years and enjoys high levels of student satisfaction. You may have the opportunity to network with a wide range of practitioners from well-known organisations, like Weightmans Solicitors, a top 45 UK law firm, The Commonwealth Secretariat or No 36 Bedford Row Chambers (London), one of the foremost family law barristers’ chambers in the country, to name a few and undertake research-based assignments responding to a range of contemporary issues.

Course information

The course aims to develop your understanding of the dynamic nature of law and law reform in specific areas of International Law.

It is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments and the requirements of the profession, together with the needs of industry, new legislative and other changes.

A diverse range of modules link together to provide an effective International Law framework, within which you will learn to appreciate the relevance of rules and principles in the International Legal environment, particularly in light of the contemporary developments in the world arena.

Career prospects

Master’s level qualifications are highly regarded in any professional or academic sector, but there is an increasing need for knowledge of International Law in various companies, government and state agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGO), either as a legal adviser or in a non-legal capacity.

On successful graduation, you should possess a range of transferrable graduate and employability skills in research, analysis, synthesis, critical judgement, evaluation, application of knowledge, problem-solving, communication and reflective learning.

Some students have chosen to specialise in Diplomatic Relations or Human Rights Law as lawyers both at home and abroad, dealing with legal issues affecting the contemporary international community, for example, global security, international human rights and state responsibility and matters relating to international environmental law and responsibility. Others have gone on to work for international organisations in a non-legal capacity, in areas such as international human rights and the environment, and for local and national government agencies. This course can also be an excellent preparation for further degrees and research and academic careers in universities and other academic and research institutions.

Coventry University is committed to preparing you for your future career and giving you a competitive edge in the graduate job market. The University's Careers and Employability team provide a wide range of support services to help you plan and prepare for your career.
