About Population Health & Environmental Sciences Research Mphil/phd Md/(res) in Kings College London

Overview

The School of Population Health & Environmental Sciences is one of seven Schools that make up the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s.

Our vision is to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and populations using our world leading infrastructures, global networks and interdisciplinary practice.

The School combines experts in population and global health with analytical, environmental, forensic and social scientists. Our 300 staff innovate across disciplines to understand challenges from air pollution to stroke rehabilitation, using data and informatics to ensure that action is informed by evidence. 78% of our research submitted to REF 2014* was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent: the sixth highest in the UK.

Based at King’s Denmark Hill, Guy’s and Waterloo campuses, we teach the next generation of doctors, physiotherapists and specialist researchers, delivering 59,000 hours of teaching every year.

Description

Our research builds on the outstanding legacy of population and public health, environmental and forensic sciences, general practice, epidemiology and statistical research at King’s. It encompasses Analytics (broadly defined as the discovery and interpretation of meaningful patterns in quantitative and qualitative data), Investigation (broadly exploring analytical solutions to complex problems at the individual as well as population level) and Applied Research (broadly using analytics, including laboratory investigations, to identify needs and propose and evaluate new solutions to global societal health and social problems).

We are forging new connections between pure, social and data science to advance our understanding of disease and improve health and care for patients and populations.

Course study environment

Students work alongside researchers and are supervised by two members of academic staff all overseen by a Departmental postgraduate research co-ordinator and the School postgraduate research lead.

Postgraduate training

All students are regularly notified about skills development opportunities through a monthly Postgraduate Research Newsletter. Participation in the annual Postgraduate Research Symposium is compulsory for all students and provides an opportunity to improve science communication and presentation skills. All postgraduate students present their research in seminars to the whole Department as well as to their research groups. Opportunities are available for postgraduate students to present their work at national and international scientific meetings. Our postgraduate students also assist with teaching of undergraduates as demonstrators in practical classes or leading tutorials.
