About Public Health And Community Wellbeing Bsc (hons) in University of Bradford

Overview

This innovative interdisciplinary programme prepares you for a wide range of graduate roles related to health, wellbeing and social care in public, private or voluntary organisations.

The programme is designed for people who want to work flexibly, innovatively and responsibly with individuals or communities to improve their health and wellbeing by tackling social disadvantage and health inequalities.

You will develop a critical understanding of the skills required for the delivery of health and social care services. A key strength of the programme is the focus on enterprise, employability and entrepreneurship.

You will be taught by a diverse staff team that includes health professionals, psychologists, sociologists, epidemiologists and other experts who are actively involved in health research. As a result, you will benefit from up-to-date knowledge and different perspectives on what makes a community healthy as you develop your own professional identity.

This programme has been developed in partnership with City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Learning and assessment

Teaching methods include formal lectures, seminars, group work and tutorials, supported by our virtual learning environment Canvas. This is used to access additional learning resources and will let you participate in online group discussions and activities.

Assessment strategies will aim to develop both knowledge and skills and include written assessment, verbal and poster presentations, reflective accounts and case studies.

Career prospects

The NHS, health and social care sectors are undergoing an unprecedented level of change. Massive challenges such as an ageing population, social and economic challenges, and new technology are changing the way that services are accessed by people and how health and social care professionals deliver them. Traditional professional roles and identities are changing too.

Services that have traditionally been delivered by the NHS are increasingly outsourced to the third sector (charities, community and voluntary organisations) and individuals are increasingly expected to take responsibility for managing their own lifestyle and health.

This programme equips you to be part of a new generation of agile worker who can not only cope, but thrive in this environment to become a future leader.

Graduates have entered roles as health trainers, housing support officers and pathway care navigators. Other graduates enter services such as health promotion, public health, healthy living centres, and drug and alcohol services. Other areas of work have included working with sufferers of domestic violence, supporting people with mental health problems, social enterprises, voluntary, charity and third sector organisations such as Barnardo’s.
