About Counselling And Psychotherapy Studies, BA (hons) in University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)

UCLan is one of only a few educational institutions where three different approaches to counselling and psychotherapy can be studied. These are psychoanalytical, humanistic and cognitive behavioural. This course gives a solid grounding in the understanding of counselling and psychotherapy and offers transferable skills, particularly relevant when working closely with other people in a helping profession such as nursing, social work and probation, as well as in human resources, management or mediation positions. You’ll undertake a placement during Year 2 to help prepare you for the workplace and, although not a practitioner course, this degree will prepare you for work in the field of counselling.

You will consider what counselling and psychotherapy are as well as some of the contributing subjects that will help to expand knowledge in this field. Following this, you will be introduced to the three major theories that underpin counselling/psychotherapy work in today's society (i.e. cognitive behavioural, humanistic and psychoanalytic theories).

You will expand your knowledge and develop skills in relation to each of these theoretical areas, in addition to developing knowledge about yourself through personal development. These skills will be put into a variety of contexts and will be underpinned by an increasing awareness of ethics and ethical principles in the way that counsellors/psychotherapists work. You will also develop your knowledge in relation to the research process and to how knowledge is formed.

You will consolidate your education to date through the development and application of counselling theories to particular contexts. An elective module will allow you to consider different perspectives as well as to develop an awareness of the philosophical underpinnings behind a number of theories.

Access to three specialist teaching rooms with up-to-date multimedia systems incorporating recording equipment, in addition to a specialist recording studio and editing suite.

The courses focus on interpersonal skills common to most approaches within a variety of counselling situations, and use is made of experiential learning, complemented by more formal lectures and discussions. For this course, a student-centred approach to teaching is adopted and learning will be predominantly based around exercises and discussions. However there will also be lectures, seminars, skills learning exercises and camera/DVD work. The overall assessment strategy is geared to the same goals - that of the development of interpersonal and counselling skills, and a knowledge base of all three approaches - the Person-Centred Approach, the Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Approach or the Psychoanalytic Approach. The assessment strategy culminates with the completion of a dissertation related to an area of interest within the fields of counselling and psychotherapy. The course may lead onto a recognised, professional Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy (BACP accredited – British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy).
