FURTHER INFORMATION

The course is delivered by a dynamic team of academics, many of whom have international experience and are publishing in a variety of journals, trade press and media outlets. The course has a number of employability-based modules and students are encouraged to work part-time for valuable work experience.

Hospitality is a global industry, where dealing with international guests may be a day-to-day occurrence. We support you to develop intercultural communication skills through our wide range of language courses, which you can take up as an option within the course, or as an additional award.

In the early stages, you will explore the hospitality industry and its development from an international perspective. You will look into the context of human resource skills as well as the field of customer service. All students will develop skills in food and beverage operations. The development of practical skills will aid you when seeking employment in the sector and in addition to this it will give you an awareness of hospitality provision from a supervisory and management perspective.

This course provides a strong management orientation through the study of marketing issues alongside the analytical approach of talent management, applied research and service quality. The international nature of the industry is also considered in more detail by conducting a study of current trends in hospitality, corporate hospitality and related business events. Planning for the placement year will also take place to prepare you for the future ahead.

In Year 3 (Year 4 if you started in the Foundation Entry)  you can choose to undertake a 48-week placement. Our dedicated placement team work with you to find you a placement opportunity that is relevant to your career aspirations. Our students take up a range of opportunities and have worked in four and five star hotels in China, USA and New Zealand, and the family entertainment resorts of Orlando Florida. You can also work throughout the UK for appropriate hospitality placements and we will support you in using them effectively through your search, application process and implementation of suitable options.

The final year is founded on the critical and analytic study of the global hospitality industry and the needs of strategic management. A personal and professional development module helps to capitalize on the placement year, providing an opportunity to reflect upon achievements and plan the next stage of a professional career. A range of options provide some flexibility and allow students to develop and follow their interests in managing quality, tourism and events experiences. A culmination of your academic development is tested in an independent, research-based option which you will need to complete in the final year of your course. You may select a full dissertation, an independent study module or a consultancy project, or an entrepreneurial business project, following your preferences and areas of interest.

As part of the practical modules, you will also take up additional certificates and qualifications needed in the industry. For example, a Level 2 Award in Catering in Food Safety allows you to safely practise your culinary and front-of-house skills in local restaurants.

OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the course are pursuing careers throughout the international hospitality industry. Many are working for large international organisations, whilst a significant number have chosen to work more locally in the UK hotel industry. You can aspire to working in cruise ships, nightclubs, casinos, major hotel chains and restaurant groups. We also have a number of students going into operations roles whilst others specialise in Human Resource or Marketing.

The optional 48-week work placement in the third year (Year 4 if you started on the Foundation Entry) ensures that graduates have a good level of work experience once they graduate. You can also choose to work abroad on an international placement if you so wish; students in previous years have worked for Disney and selected hospitality management establishments including Marriott Texas, Hilton hotels London, Fairmont Hotels Dubai. Some have even run their own hospitality venue (Rivington Barn). There is also an opportunity to participate in local, national and international field visits.
