About Applied Physics Bsc (hons) in University of Dundee
Applied physics uses methods and principles of physics to help people solve technological problems, usually in an industrial context.
Compared to theoretical physics, applied physics is a more hands-on course, bridging the gap between physics and mechanical engineering. Applied physicists use physics, or conduct physics research, to develop new technologies to solve engineering problems. This often requires thinking 'outside the box', using your skills in physics to understand the problem at hand.
We'll teach you fundamental skills including quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and electrodynamics. You will consolidate the taught elements with laboratory-based practical classes.
You will develop transferable skills and leadership potential. You'll gain confidence to think on your feet by working independently but also effectively as part of a team.
Career
When you graduate, you will have a broad knowledge in theoretical and applied science, combined with high level mathematical skills. You'll be able to solve both abstract and concrete problems.
There are many employment sectors where creative problem solvers and troubleshooters are in high demand. These include tech-driven industries such as defence, telecommunications, computing, medicine and energy.

- Students must have good results (60% overall) in the CBSE, ISC or leading state board XII Standard exams.
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS: The requirement for most undergraduate and postgraduate degrees is IELTS 6.5 overall with a 6.0 in writing and 6.0/5.5 minimum in the other three components.
- TOEFL (iBT): 88 overall, including at least 21 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
- PTE: 62 overall, including at least 56 in all four skills
