About Theatre Studies Mlitt in University of Glasgow

This Masters engages with a wide variety of histories and practices attached to the study of theatre. It is designed to enable you to become proficient in the techniques of historical, sociological and theoretical analysis of the theatrical process, past and present. A key strength of this programme is its flexibility, which enables you to create a portfolio of courses based on your individual needs and interests.

  • The programme’s flexible structure allows you to work in an interdisciplinary capacity, selecting options from across the College of Arts to place theatre studies in conversation with a broad range of humanities subjects.
  • You’ll have the opportunity to undertake a major archival placement, carrying out original research in the Scottish Theatre Archive’s unique collection of materials spanning the archives of the Citizens Theatre, Scottish Ballet,  the Edinburgh Fringe and the BBC Radio Scotland script collection alongside materials from major, influential contemporary companies such as Untitled Projects and Suspect Culture.
  • Glasgow is home to a huge variety of nationally significant theatres and companies producing work that spans new writing, canonical classics, devised performance and live art, with major organisations such as National Theatre Scotland, Playwright Studio Scotland and the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) based in the city.
  • Our facilities include a studio theatre, rehearsal / workshop space and large flexible-seat theatre seating over 180 spectators, allowing you to extend historical and theoretical inquiry through practice.

CAREER PROSPECTS

This programme examines the nature and function of the theatrical event and theatre culture from a range of critical, historical and practical perspectives. It prepares you for a wide range of careers closely connected to theatre provision and production.

The programme's critical components also provide a good foundation for those wishing to progress to doctoral study

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry requirements for postgraduate taught programmes are a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (for example, GPA 3.0 or above) in a relevant subject unless otherwise specified.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training)

  • 7.0 with no sub-test under 6.5.
  • Tests must have been taken within 4 years 5 months of start date. Combined scores from two tests taken within 6 months of each other can be considered.

  • 95 with minimum R 23, L 23, S 22, W 24.
