Our degree in Film Studies is designed to help you view films from a different perspective. In-depth examinations of film history, international industries and broader social and cultural contexts will allow you to develop strong skills in critical analysis and research. This is aided by learning about camera techniques and editing processes first-hand, in order to obtain a detailed understanding of the medium of film.

Our Greenwich Campus is a popular location for film crews and has featured in Hollywood blockbusters such as Thor: The Dark World and Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides.

Career options for our graduates include working in distribution, exhibition and marketing within the film and TV industries, as well as advertising, curation, public service and teaching.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

You can opt into register on 'sandwich mode' which means you can do a one year, full time, paid placement in between your second and final year. Whilst on a sandwich placement you retain your student status and have full support from the University and your tutors as normal. Students are responsible for finding their own placements though we will support you through the application process.

How long is my placement?

Sandwich placements must last for a minimum of 36 weeks full-time, though they can be as long as 13 months.

What are the financial arrangements?

Credit-bearing work placements are unpaid. However, sandwich placements are normally paid full-time positions. The salary should reflect the going rate for an entry level role in the relevant industry.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

There are a wide range of opportunities in the film, television and other media industries, as well as in public service and teaching. Graduates from this degree have gone on to work in film and TV development, production and post-production, media marketing and advertising, in communication roles in industry, and for film festivals. You will also have a range of postgraduate options.

Are internships available?

Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience if possible, including internships. Students are responsible for finding their own internships though we will support you through the application process. Students can also gain an internship through Greenwich Bright and the STEPS programme.

Do you provide employability services?

Employability activities take place all the time at Greenwich and students are encouraged to take part in as many opportunities as possible. The central Employability and Careers Service provides support for students preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles, such as CV clinics, mock interviews and Employability skills workshops. 

Each School also has its own Employability Officer who provides specific opportunities relevant to your own course. They work closely with professionals in industry to ensure you are well-prepared for the workplace and have already begun to build your professional network by the time you graduate.

In order for you to start one of our programmes, you will need to meet both the academic and English language requirements. Below is a list of our standard entry requirements for most programmes, however, please note that some programmes may have a different entry requirement or require further assessment, such as a portfolio of work or interview. Academic Entry Requirements

Undergraduate Degrees (Bachelor's)

For entry to our four-year extended degree programmes, you will need to have met the following:

• Standard XII with a minimum of 50%
• 70% in English in Standard XII or English language requirements

For standard entry to our Bachelor's programmes, you will need to have met the following:

• Standard XII with a minimum of 60%(70% for Law, Architecture)
• 70% in English in Standard XII or English language requirements

Some Bachelor's degrees allow advanced entry to year 2 or year 3, depending on your study history.

For advanced entry to Year 2 you will need to complete:

• Year 1 of a relevant degree with a minimum of 55%

You must show your English language skills to complete your course. Requirements vary by course and level, but the good news is, you don't have to wait to reach the required level before you apply.

Here's what you need:

• IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component

For some undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses, you need:

• IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component

For MPhil/PhD postgraduate research degrees, you need:

• IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component

For many of our extended degree programmes, you will need:

• IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component
