Nanoscience and the study of nanomaterials bring together all facets of science to study, understand and apply all things small.

Nanomaterials have had a profound influence on the direction of research ever since the scaleable production of tiny materials became possible. Now, researchers apply nanomaterials in areas of research and future technologies that will solve many of our societal needs – from bone and muscular regeneration to new age batteries.

Materials physics and nanoscience are among one the fastest growing and most exciting areas of research at Sussex. Studying with us, you’ll learn how to apply the fundamentals of physics and chemistry to nanomaterials and their emerging technologies.

This course is for you if you have a physics, chemistry and/or engineering background and are interested in an academic or industrial career in nanomaterials.

To usher in the next industrial revolution based on nanotechnologies, there’s a high demand for nanoscientists. As a graduate, you’ll be ready for industry roles in fields such as:

You’ll also be well equipped to take a research degree in physics, chemistry, biology or engineering.

  • Bachelors degree with an overall mark of at least 54-69% depending on your university.
