BUILD A CAREER IN CHILDHOOD SERVICES

The BA Childhood Studies offers you the opportunity to build a career supporting children and their families in a variety of environments.

The course will also deepen your understanding of issues related to childhood and services for children and families.

You will gain an appreciation of the values underpinning children's services and the importance of working in partnership with professionals from different disciplines. You will also address childcare-related management issues.

PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

You will have the chance to complete two, three-week blocks of work-based experience each year. Recent examples of organisations for student placements include Spark of Genius, Kirktonholme Nurseries and local councils.

COURSE DETAILS

The BA Childhood Studies includes childcare policy at home and abroad; equality; inclusion; health and well-being; language; communication; and early literacy skills

Guest speakers will help to further improve your understanding of the subject. Recent speakers have included Professor Li Li of Kunming University who provided details on international perspectives of early years provision in China. In addition, Sue Robson of Roehampton University addressed creativity in the early years.

Jobs

UWS graduates have gained work in the integrated childcare services with children under five years, in out-of-school care, as well as in project work offering support for children and their families.

Graduates have embarked on careers as family support workers, early years practitioners and NHS community nursery nurses.

Further Study

Social Work or Childhood Practice qualifications are possible depending on experience. Graduates may be eligible for postgraduate initial teacher education programmes.
