About Computer Science And Information Systems in Saginaw Valley State University

Computing is spreading everywhere! Social media. Smartphones. Artificial intelligence. It's a fascinating and fast-growing career field. The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems prepares students for careers in computing by offering two different undergraduate degrees, a graduate degree, and two minors--with the most up-to-date content available.  We teach using the latest technologies and software.  We research cutting edge technologies, including cybersecurity, machine learning, networking, and software engineering.  Small class sizes and accessible professors enable students to get individualized attention.  Paid co-op and internship jobs and research opportunities enable students to build their resumes with hands-on work experience and published research papers.  If you are looking for the perfect match of theory and application with solid academic programs that will enhance your future, find it right here in the CSIS Department at SVSU.

  • Outstanding research: Our faculty are published in highly ranked journals and conferences in computing, including IEEE Transactions, and serve as lead author on IEEE whitepapers. Our faculty also advise and co-author with students to publish in IEEE and ACM conferences (Tubbs, Moorman, Arenas)
  • Outstanding extracurricular activities: Our faculty advise some of the most popular clubs and activities on campus: ACM/HSPC/ICPC, TEDxSVSU (TED Talks), Hour Of Code, Google IgniteCS. Our faculty have helped provide web and mobile app software for university organizations and activities like the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum, the HealthyU wellness program, the FIRST Robotics competition and the Moot Court competition.
  • Students of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM): SVSU Chapter organizes community outreach programs, for instance, holding Michigan High School Programming Contest (HSPC) at SVSU, programming training for local high school teams to prepare them for a national robotics competition, invited tech talks with regional industries. Dr. Rahman the program coordinator is the advisor of this club.
  • Google IgniteCS: Funded by Google to outreach community middle school White Pine to teach computer science related technologies. Only one of two universities in Michigan to win a competitive bid against thousands of other applications to provide Google-funded outreach.
  • TEDxSVSU: is not specifically related to the CSIS department or MS-CSIS program though we have had tech-oriented speakers, like Elad Inbar, President of RobotLab, and Ben Champagne, meme expert. A CSIS faculty member is the licensed Organizer of TEDxSVSU, which is an educational asset to the entire university community. CSIS is interested not only in CS but also in broader issues locally and globally that affect not only the technology but human well-being
  • ICPC Programming: Our programming team “SVSU Cardinal” secured 51st position out of 130 teams in the prestigious 2015 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC). Among the teams we defeated were the University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburg, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, University of Akron. Dr. Rahman is the coach of SVSU teams.
  • Outstanding teaching: Our department has one of the highest (perhaps THE highest) teacher ratings of any Michigan CS department on RateMyProfessors. Our faculty innovates and collaborates, producing a crowd-sourcing-style lesson planning website and numerous YouTube videos. Most importantly, our faculty provides learning challenges and one-on-one support to ensure students get the most out of their academic experience.
